Since the beginning of the preseason tour in Austria, FB TV is holding daily interviews with Fenerbahce players and yesterday’s guest was Brazilian midfielder Deivid.
The 29-year-old was asked a series of routine questions before an unusual one which came unexpected. Presenter Yasir Kaya asked, “Would you consider becoming a Turkish citizen?” The midfielder did not appear surprised and casually answered, “I am incredibly happy at Fenerbahce and if that type of offer came to me, why not? I would be delighted and can even go one step further and say that, if seen appropriate, I would love to play for the Turkey national team. Marco Aurelio became Mehmet Aurelio and his success is something I would like to experience too. It would be a privilege to become Turkish and to wear the national team jersey.” This question is non-coincidental bearing in mind the exceeded foreign player quota at Fenerbahce. Typically a citizen requires a minimum of 5 years before being naturalised as Turkish, but as Deivid has not played for his native Brazil there is a possibility of completing the process sooner. Former Fenerbahce forward Marcio Nobre became Mert Nobre after just 2-and-a-half years in Turkey through a legal loophole. The Canaries’ are understood to have instructed their lawyers to investigate that case further and if necessary use it as reference when taking Deivid's matter to the Home Office. Incidentally, Stephen Appiah is expected to be released by Fenerbahce once FIFA reach a verdict on his appeal and if Deivid switches to Turkish citizenship another foreign player slot will become available.
