The match was played in sub-zero temperatures and ended the way it started, 0-0.
Neither side took control of the game and chances where few and far between. It is fair to say Kayserispor had the better of the few goal scoring opportunities created. However, they came up against an inspired goalkeeping performance from Volkan Demirel (pictured).
The Fenerbahce goalkeeper made two fine saves to deny Mehmet’s Eren and Topuz in the first half. Kayserispor did manage to find the back of the net on the half hour mark only for the goal to be ruled offside by match official Bunyamin Gezer.
In contrast, Fenerbahce did not conjure up any clear chances and resorted to trying their luck from range. Roberto Carlos had three kick attempts two of which were aimed at Kayserispor goalkeeper Hasan and the other, sailed over the bar.
Before kick-off Fenerbahce General Manager Volkan Balli voiced his concerns on the weather and pitch conditions, citing both as possible cause for injury. Maybe the players had similar worries as they failed to get going and most shied away from one-on-one challenges.
Despite Zico confirming his satisfaction with the result, this is Fenerbahce’s second draw in as many Fortis Turkish Cup group C games. The Yellow Canaries will need to step it up and win their remaining two matches if they are to progress into the Quarter Finals.
