Turkish internet portal Super Online exclusively reports that Fenerbahce are on the verge of signing Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso.

Cultured midfielder Xabi Alonso became one of the first players to join Liverpool’s ‘Rafalution’ with a £10.5million move from his native Spain in August 2004.

Despite the impressive start to his Anfield career, the Spain international has become increasingly frustrated by the lack of first team action in recent seasons.

The former Real Sociedad man who did not make the squad in the final game of the season against Tottenham Hotspur fears he is being frozen out by Reds’ coach Rafael Benitez.

The 27 year old remains a popular figure amongst the Kop, but following the arrival of Javier Mascherano and the good form of Brazilian midfielder Lucas, Alonso has fallen behind in the midfield pecking order.

According to Super Online, Fenerbahce transfer committee members Mahmut Uslu and Volkan Ballı have held discussions with Alonso and have received the ‘green light’.  The club are preparing a bid to land the player singled out to solve the problems in central midfield.

avatar on a rating of 1-5 I'd give the chances of this happening a '3'.

We Liverpool fans love Xabi, even when he doesn't play his name is chanted throughout the Kop.

I fear he may leave as suggested by the article because of Mascherano & Lucas. But in addition the possible signing of Gareth Barry could make Xabi change his mind and leave.

I think we will know more after Euro 2008 where he will be a key figure for Spain.
