Turkey coach Fatih Terim has sent out a defiant message to his critics and defended his Euro 2008 squad selection.
Much has been said and written since Terim announced his 26 man shortlist for the upcoming Euro Championships. Many of the comments made voice dissatisfaction on players who have been overlooked.
The most recent disapproval came from Sivasspor President Mecnun Odyakmaz who "has trouble understanding" the exclusion of his captain Mehmet Yildiz and has claimed it to be "a mistake". Terim today responded to those criticising his judgement by stating he has picked the players who best matched his winning ambition. “The squad I have selected is the group of players I believe to be the best equipped to realise my target of winning the competition. My teams have always consisted of players with a winning mentality.” The 54 year old coach drew attention to the high level of expectation and the pressure that will be on the players, “80 million hearts will be with us every step of the way and they expect us to do well. Their prayers and belief will help us achieve our target.” When asked about which opponent he would fear most should his team get to the final Terim said, “Once we get to the final we will not care who our opponent is. We respect all teams but fear no one and there is not a team in the competition that we are unable to beat.” The Turkey manager will have to achieve this ambition without defender Servet Cetin who was taken out of the squad due to injury. His Galatasaray teammate Emre Gungor takes his place.
