Arthur Zico is having trouble understanding how the Turkish media can turn 180 degrees from one moment to the next.

The Brazilian coach was being hailed a hero after leading Fenerbahce to within touching distance of a place in the Champions League semi-final.  The common view was that Zico should be offered a long term contract extension as he successfully demonstrated his management credentials.

Fast forward a couple of weeks and just a derby defeat later many have already changed their point of view.   Zico’s line up and tactics were blamed for the 1-0 defeat at Ali Sami Yen and should Fenerbahce miss out on winning the title pundits argue that it will be his fault entirely.

Zico does not deserve this harsh criticism but Turkish media has always had a brutal edge to it.  Many columnists have made a living through reporting to two extremes whenever it suited them.  Unfortunately, however, narrow viewpoints are not just restrictive to journalists.

We have seen time and again the fickle nature of football fans and board members which helps fuel this fire.  ‘The king is dead, long live the new king’ is the common outlook with Turkish football‘s stakeholders.  Successes are quickly forgotten and failures are always remembered...
