Volkan Demirel took some time out from Galatasaray derby preperations for an exclusive interview with anglofeb.com!
The Fenerbahce Goalkeeper was kind enough to answer a set of questions prepared specifically to enlighten anglofebers on matters of interest such as his likes, dislikes, career highlights and future ambitions.
So without further ado here is the Q&A session with Turkey's number 1: 1. What does football mean to you? My source of life, I owe everything to football… 2. What about Fenerbahce and Fenerbahce fans? Words cannot describe what Fenerbahce means to me. As for our fans, the only word I can think of is magnificent. I have witnessed varying levels of support in the countries in which I have played matches in, but nothing even comes close to the passion and support of Fenerbahce fans. 3. How did you start out as a Goalkeeper? I started playing football at Kartalspor’s youth team aged 13. My local neighbourhood friends have had a major influence over me becoming a footballer I owe a lot to them. 4. You have had a meteoric rise this season, what do you owe this top level performance to? Plenty of hard work strong determination as well as mutual respect and appreciation among my teammates. There is also the Zico factor which cannot be overlooked. 5. What has been the pinnacle moment of your career to date, which memory do you treasure most? The 3 penalties I saved during the shoot out against Sevilla in the UEFA Champions League Last 16 2nd leg is a very special moment for me. 6. What are your objectives? At the moment it’s winning the league, but in future I want to win a European trophy with Fenerbahce. 7. Would you like to play in Europe some day? Yes, in the English Premier League but the club must be at least the size of Fenerbahce. 8. Can you speak other languages? How is your command of English? I am trying to learn English and am taking lessons. I can also speak enough Portugese to communicate with my Brazilian teammates on the pitch. 9. Should footballers be role models? Do you know of any good examples? Absolutely. A player should be aware that their actions are followed by millions and should therefore set a good example with how they carry themselves and with what they wear (he giggles at this point). We have several good role models such as Tumer Metin for example. 10. What factors should a football player pay close attention to? It may sound like a cliche but a footballer should always take care in their private life and avoid the pitfalls of nightlife - this is rule number one! Other important factors are making sure you stay strong and healthy and eat the right foods. After all we are in control of what we do and we eat! 11. If you hadn’t made it as a footballer what you have been doing now? My father is involved in the tourism business so I guess I would have been a part of that. 12. What advice would you give to the young aspiring Goalkeepers out there? I would recommend that they work hard and stay focused. I spend half of my day in the gym working on my strength and fitness. 13. Your Favourite: Footballer? Peter Schmeichel and Alan Shearer Film? Godfather Actor? I am a huge Robert De Niro and Al Pacino fan Singer? Ibrahim Tatlises (Turkish singer) Cuisine? I have no preference but Kebab dishes have a special place for me. Holiday Resort? My favorites at the moment are Miami and Singapore. 14. What team did you support as a boy? Fenerbahce 15. Which opponent players have you been most apprehensive of facing? Facing Ibrahimoviç and Drogba made me slightly uneasy ahead of the actual match days. In training facing Alex always makes me nervous! 16. You are much loved by anglofeb.com users do you have a special message for them? I was unaware that we had a totally English website reaching fans around the world in a language they are comfortable communicating in. I would like to thank you for pioneering such a great concept and wish you all the best. I will not leave your appreciation unfounded and hope that everything goes your way.
Thank you once again, we wish you every success throughout the rest of your career. I thank you.
NOTE: anglofeb.com would once again like to thank Volkan Demirel for not turning down our request ahead of a tough potential championship decider. We wish him and the rest of our boys every success in the crunch derby against Galatasaray.
Special thanks should also go to Dogan Yorulmaz who volunteered his time and effort in acting as the intermediary for this exclusive interview.
