Fenerbahce midfielder Deivid de Souza insists the championship race all hinges on the result against Galatasaray, but believes it will be his team which will crab dance its way to an unprecedented 18th league title.
Both Istanbul teams are on 67 points with the Yellow Canaries leading the Turkcell Super Lig table by a single goal. There is another 12 points to play for but Deivid does not think it will go down to the wire. The Brazilian is convinced that the winner of the derby will become the eventual champions. In an interviewed published in the April edition of Fenerbahce gazette, the 27 year old said, “At the moment we are in control of the situation, if we win all our matches we will automatically become champions. There are 3 title contenders, namely Fenerbahce, Galatasaray and Sivasspor but the knot will be undone in our match with Galatasaray. We must not drop points before that game so that we can go there in an advantageous position as leaders. I strongly believe that we will get the points we need and declare ourselves champions.” Before you take out your calculators, it would seem like the interview was conducted before the 2-2 draw with Ankaraspor. However, it is still mathematically possible for Fenerbahce to win the league at the ground of their bitter rivals. How? Well Fenerbahce must beat Denizlispor and hope that Istanbul Buyuksehir Belediyesi pulls off a surprise victory against Galatasaray. The Yellow Canaries will then have to beat Cim Bom Bom in their own backyard to go 6 points clear with 2 matches left. As the Kadikoy club would have won both matches the aggregate score would also be in their favour meaning that even if both clubs finished the season on same points it would not matter. Confused? Well there’s more. In order for the above to happen Fenerbahce will also require Sivasspor to drop a minimum of 3 points against Ankaraspor and Denizlispor. To sum up, Fenerbahce have to win against Denizlispor and Galatasaray whilst hoping the latter also loses to Istanbul Buyuksehir Belediyesi and Sivasspor is unable to beat Ankaraspor and Denizlispor. It is a long shot but not beyond the realms of possibility and stranger things have happened in the world of football....
