The club has publicly backed Mateja Kezman by issuing an official website announcement hoping to ease the backlash he has been subjected to after his penalty miss against Ankaraspor.
With the match at 2-1 Kezman persuaded regular penalty taker Alex to let him take an 88th minute spot kick which he unfortunately blazed over the crossbar.
This miss became costly after Mehmet Yilmaz equalized for the hosts with the last kick of the game resulting in the Yellow Canaries dropping 2 precious championship points. The statement issued began by drawing attention to the fact that many top class strikers have missed penalties during their career and reminded readers of Kezman’s importance to the Fenerbahce squad. The declaration confirmed all points won so far was a result of team effort whilst affirming the 2 points lost are significant, Fenerbahce is still top of the league and very much in control of proceedings.
The announcement concluded by calling on fans to ignore the negative press and focus on supporting Kezman and the team for the remaining matches as the team chase its 18th title win since 1959.
