The missed penalty against Ankaraspor continues to be the subject of discussion in Turkish football. After all the relentless speculation and ongoing debate Captain Alex de Souza explains his version of events.
Fenerbahce dropped 2 crucial championship points against Ankaraspor which may have been avoided had Mateja Kezman converted a penalty in the 88th minute. The Canaries were leading 2-1 at the time but had to settle for a point after Mehmet Yilmaz equalized deep into stoppage time. Lip readers were quick to suggest that the Serbian striker said ‘por favor’ (please) pleading with regular taker Alex to allow him to take the penalty. The Brazilian stepped back granting Kezman his wish, only for the 28 year old to miss the target from 12 yards.
When questioned why he did this, the Fenerbahce skipper said, “A lot of people are talking of a Brazilian 'gang' in the team. If I took the ball from Kezman this speculation would have heightened. I did not want to risk this happening at this stage of the season despite knowing that Kezman is not the second choice penalty taker after me. Anyway, what’s done is done.” What's done is done indeed, maybe people can now finally move on...
