Mateja Kezman blazed an 88th minute penalty over the bar and the missed spot kick ultimately cost his team dear as Ankaraspor scored a 95th minute equalizer losing Fenerbahce 2 precious points.
The opening match of week 30 saw Besiktas lose 1-0 at home to Genclerbirligi OFTAS, but other title rivals won their respective games. Galatasaray beat Trabzon 1-0 at home and Sivasspor won away at Kayseri with the same score line.
At kickoff time the Yellow Canaries knew they had to win at Anakaraspor to keep their two point gap lead at the top. Despite the high pressure of the situation Fenerbahce started well and Vederson saw a rasping shot canon off the crossbar inside the first 2 minutes. However, the yellow and navy side did not have to wait long to take the lead. In the 7th minute of the game Aurelio controlled a long throw by Gokhan Gonul and helped the ball on to Alex who found the bottom corner. On the quarter hour mark Devid had an effort deflected away for a corner via the defender’s arm but the referee didn’t spot it and denied the visitors a clear penalty. The early goal did little to settle the leaders’ nerves, however, as they sat back deeper and deeper inviting Ankaraspor on to them. The hosts obliged and threatened on a couple of occasions before leveling on 32 minutes. Deivid’s misplaced pass was intercepted and crossed into the box. Vederson was under no pressure but scuffed his clearance only as far as Tita who was merely 5 meters away. The Brazilian squared the ball to his countryman Hamilton on the edge of the box and he stroked the ball into the bottom corner. Fenerbahce started the second half more positively and regained the lead 13 minutes after the restart. Alex cut a corner to Vederson 25 yards out and his shot wrong footed the goalkeeper who misjudged the flight of the ball. Ankaraspor began taking risks in search of an equalizer and Fenerbahce looked to capitalise as the game turned into a cat and mouse affair. Adem had already seen his shot come back off the upright as the hosts sent warning signals. Zico was quick to act taking Colin-Kazim Richards off for Ugur Boral, but the most significant substitution came in the 81st minute when he replaced Semih Senturk with Mateja Kezman. Within 6 minutes of coming the Serbian striker won a penalty when his cross struck the arm of Risp. Unlike the handball incident in the first half the referee was well positioned and immediately pointed to the spot on 88 minutes. Kezman seemingly pleaded with regular penalty taker Alex and the skipper walked away leaving the ball with the Fenerbahce number 9. The 28 year old took a long run but smashed his kicked over the bar. At the time the players looked unmoved as Fenerbahce were still in the lead with the match entering stoppage time, but the real extent of the damage came in the 95th minute. A long hopeful ball into the penalty box was headed on by De Nigris who found Mehmet Yildiz and he scored with the last kick of the game. The two additional points which came deep into stoppage time against Kayserispor last week have been lost in the same fashion this week. The 2 priceless points dropped at Ankara mean Fenerbahce is now level on points with Galatasaray (67) whilst Sivasspor are just 3 points behind them both with 4 matches remaining.
