Arthur Zico has declared Fenerbahce among the best 5 clubs in Europe whilst commenting on his future at the club and his hopes of a back-to-back championship in only his second year in charge. The Fenerbahce Coach held a press conference after yesterday’s training session at Samandira to reflect on the club’s Champions League adventure, his immediate future and the title race. Speaking of the Champions League campaign Zico said, “Perhaps we could have gone further in the Champions League and we enjoyed our experience, we have a taste for the competition and want to go even farther next season. We are aware of the joy we have brought to our fans in this adventure but we want to push on from this and make them even happier next time.” The Brazilian coach then reflected on the exit from the competition, “The early goal [in the second leg against Chelsea] affected us but we still had a chance until the very end. It just wasn’t to be. When you look at all 4 quarter final results, from the teams that were eliminated we were closest to the semi-finals and can say that we finished the tournament in fifth place.” Talking of his future at the club the 55 year old confirmed, “We will begin talks next week. I want to stay on at Fenerbahce and do not foresee any issues from my side regarding a contract extension. Fenerbahce has opened its doors to me and given me the opportunity of competing at the top level with Europe’s finest. I am honoured to be coaching a giant club like Fenerbahce. The facilities and working conditions provided by the club’s officials is top class and this is important to any professional. I would like to thank everyone associated with the club for giving me this opportunity and for their patience during times where things were not always going our way.” The legendary Brazilian ended the conference by reiterating his intentions of regaining the Turkish league title. “We are nearing the end of the season. We must put our European disappointment behind us and focus on winning the league. There are 5 matches left and each one is a final. First up is Ankaraspor and we will take each game as it comes.”
Here’s hoping for a long term agreement with the man who we all so adore…
