Semih Senturk earned Fenerbahce 3 priceless points by scoring a goal with the final touch of the game after Alex had earlier cancelled out Saidou's lead for the visitors.
After the great result in the Champions League quarter final first leg in midweek the Yellow Canaries had to turn their attention to the Turkcell Super Lig once more and perseve their status as league leaders. Roberto Carlos returned to the starting line up for the first time since 20 February. The Brazilian's return pushed Vederson to left wing in place of Ugur Boral. Gokhan Gonul returned to right back, Yasin Cakmak started in place of Edu and Serdar Kulbilge was in goal instead of Volkan Demirel as Zico made a few changes to the line up that beat Chelsea.
The home team began well and enjoyed more of the early possession with Kayserispor goalkeeper Ivankov denying both Gokhan Gonul and Aurelio goal scoring opportunities.
When the clock showed 32 minutes it was the away team who took the lead slightly against the run of play. Cangele took a corner which the Fenerbahce players failed to defend and Inglesias turned the ball in from the byline on to the legs of Saidou to convert from six yards out.
3 minutes after going a goal behind Fenerbahce managed to squander one further opportunity later when Deivid, Vederson and Kezman failed to head in to an empty net after a Roberto Carlos cross sailed over the head of Ivankov.
In the second half the hosts tried upping the tempo early by bringing on the in-form Colin-Kazim Richards followed by Semih Senturk inside 15 minutes of the restart. However, it took a controversial penalty decision for the canaries to draw level.
Kazim floated in a cross from the right and as the ball was sailing harmlessly wide referee Hakan Sivriselvi adjudged Deivid to have been pulled down as he tried to get on the end it. Alex took the resulting penalty and sent Ivankov the wrong way to cancel Saidou's opener in the 65th minute.
The remaining minutes saw Kayserispor sit back and wait for the counter attack as Fenerbahce pressed forward. Not many chances were created and the away defence looked comfortable using up every opportunity to slow the game down through players refusing to get up after the slightest of contact. However, this endless effort at time wasting and gamesmanship would ultimately be their undoing.
The referee allowed an extra 5 minutes to compensate for the stoppages and this additional period helped Fenerbahce win the game. As the clock ticked a few seconds passed the 95 minute mark, Deivid floated a direct ball into the opponent penalty area where Semih applied the deftest of touches to glance his header beyond the dive of Ivankov. This goal will have demoralised Galatasaray, Sivasspor and Besiktas as much as it did the Kayserispor players and coaching staff who were protesting around the referee at full time. Whilst goalkeeper Ivankov was congratulating his opposing players in a sportsmanlike way, his teammates and members of his club's coaching staff surrounded the match official wavings fingers of discontent.
The Fenerbahce players can now divert their full attention to next Tuesday's match at Stamford Bridge where they have the opportunity to rewrite the history books yet again this season.
