Speaking on his weekly slot on FBTV, Captain Alex de Souza expressed his thoughts on the Chelsea challenge before sharing his view how to improve the quality of Turkish football.

 

Fenerbahce were drawn against Chelsea for the Champions League quarter final last week and the Brazilian play maker insists the London club have the edge, but refused to rule out his team’s chances:  

 

“We are aware of the calibre and quality of the Chelsea squad.  They compete in the world's best league which is watched by millions every week – us included.  They are a very wealthy club bankrolled by Roman Abramovic who has helped sign a number of world stars.  However, we must put this to one side and focus on what we have to do against them.  Our motivation, hunger and passion to win must be at the highest level and above theirs.” 

 

“When you look at the two teams of course Chelsea are the favourites.   This will be our first experience of the Champions League quarter final whereas Chelsea has been here a few times before and this fact cannot be ignored.  However, as players we have to think positively.  When we set foot on the pitch we must see ourselves as their equals.  After all, every match starts on equal terms, 11 versus 11 and 0-0.  If we can implement Zico’s tactics and demonstrate our own quality over the two games, we will have a chance.” 

 

The 30 year old then commented on the poor quality of football pitches in the Turkish league arguing that improving them will help improve the standard of the Turkcell Super Lig.   

 

Alex then concluded his interview by suggesting that recently appointed Turkish Football Association (TFF) reviews the current 6+2 foreign player limit arguing more foreign players will help raise the bar. 

 

Expect this to be a common theme in Fenerbahce player interviews going forward.  Especially as Aziz Yildirim is now president of the Turkish Football Clubs Committee (TKB) also...
